Senior Product Counsel

Credit Karma has grown significantly through the years: we've added more than 70 million members in the last five years alone and now have more than 1,000 employees across our offices in San Francisco, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Leeds, London and soon Oakland.As Senior Product Counsel, you will proactively assess legal risk and use your extensive experience to provide smart, practical guidance to the company’s largest business, credit cards, as well as other teams throughout the financial product development lifecycle. You will report to the Associate General Counsel and work closely with members of our Legal team and cross-functional teams across the organization. The role requires a self-motivated and highly collaborative individual who excels in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do:

  • Taking ownership as Legal stakeholder to help our Product, Engineering, Copy and Design teams in developing innovative and compelling personal finance tools for consumers
  • Assisting our Business Development team with on-boarding and managing business partners and their product offerings
  • Leading and managing complex cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders to manage existing risks or proactively identify and mitigate upcoming risks
  • Assessing the business impact of new and evolving legal and regulatory requirements in the consumer financial products space
  • Educating stakeholders in a simple, easy to understand way about regulatory issues as they relate to a broad range of products and features
  • Providing actionable, business-savvy guidance that creatively solves legal and business issues
  • Making assertive decisions on when and how to take smart risks to achieve the business’s goals
  • Knowing what and how to communicate with company leadership to identify and address underlying problems (not just discrete issues) arising in regulatory or operational areas
  • Managing a high volume of work while being able to maintain perspective and prioritize the work according to company goals
  • Mentoring and training junior team members, whether as a supervisor or as a senior member of the team in a non-supervisory role, and providing thoughtful feedback to other on the Legal team and throughout the organization to help them grow

What We Expect:

  • JD from a top law school and excellent academic credentials
  • Member of the California Bar
  • 7+ years of relevant experience, including well-established expertise and leadership in consumer finance and privacy law, such as the FCRA, TILA, RESPA, ECOA and GLBA
  • Experience in the financial products space, and in particular the credit card industry, a major plus
  • Superior ability to lead projects involving cross-functional stakeholders
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage projects effectively and help others do the same
  • Intellectual creativity and problem-solving skills that involve taking smart legal risks
  • Knowledge of technology and current trends in consumer-facing platforms
