Job Description

Field Producer

An international media company that captures people at the heart of stories, and focuses on the ideas, issues, and context that other outlets miss. Launched in 1994, VICE operates in 35 territories across the globe, making 1500 pieces of content every day with a focus on five lines of business: VICE Digital, an award-winning international network of digital content; VICE STUDIOS, a feature film and television production studio; VICELAND, an Emmy-winning international television network; a Peabody award-winning NEWS division; and VIRTUE, a global, full-service creative agency with 26 offices around the world.

VICE x Team

We produce the most important and compelling news across the world for our VICE News audience.

We need an established documentary or news producer with robust international and domestic experience who is willing to deploy quickly on stories around the country or world, frequently, and often last minute.

The Role x You

Producers are the engine of VICE News’ coverage operation. As a producer, you will be expected to pitch ideas and carry them through to completion. You will also be expected to accept assignments -- from breaking news to feature stories -- and to act on them quickly. Producers design their story budgets and are expected to keep to them. They are responsible for factual and legal concerns in their stories. Producers must be comfortable working with a small team and training AP's for future success. This is a hands-on job at every phase: from conception through production; as well as post-production to delivery.

Expect long hours and occasional weekend work. Expect to be called upon to travel at a moment's notice.

Candidates must have a clear understanding of what makes a story worthy of being covered by Vice News. Applications must include sample work/links, as well as a full resume and professional references. Candidates should also include a brief cover letter and three-story pitches that are actionable from a logistical standpoint and fit the Vice News style. Due to the number of applicants we cannot respond to every application.

You have these:

  • Strong editorial professional ethics
  • 3 to 5 years of proven experience in production at well-regarded networks, cable networks, digital production companies, or equivalent
  • Extensive knowledge of television news and documentary film production
  • Ability to shoot is preferred
  • Ability to write clearly
  • Ability to deal with multiple and changing priorities
  • Detail oriented and highly organized
  • Willing to work long hours, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally as needed, sometimes at the last minute
  • Experience managing and taking care of crews in the field over extended periods in foreign environments
  • Experience in hostile situations a bonus
  • Knowledge of budgeting and ability to actualize costs
  • Working knowledge of Mac computer systems

We’d love if you also had these:

  • Pitch, research, report stories that will appear on VICE News Tonight
  • Work independently as well as with correspondents and other producers on long form stories that fit our show’s model of storytelling
  • Must have a strong writing ability and clear, concise thinking
  • Must be a self-starter
  • Establish and maintain contacts; develop sources; and secure interviews and access of the highest level
  • Oversee both field and in-house elements of story production
  • Work with graphics team to come up with creative and informative ways to tell a story
  • Secure appropriate rights and clearances for video usage
  • Oversee all costs of production and post-production
  • Oversee junior production staff

We want to find people who believe in our goals and feel inspired enough to grow while they’re here to fill the role, rather than someone who checks the boxes but isn’t invested. We encourage you to apply and show us what you’ve got. To learn more read the VICE Guide to VICE
