We’re motivated by the fulfilment of solving hard problems to achieve something profound and transformative. Your Mission The Reliability Engineering organization aims to provide easy-to-use and useful tools and frameworks for both the Game Technology Unit) and First Party Studios to enable them test, release  and operate their high quality products (e.g., components/services for the Games Technology Unit; games for the First Party Studios), quickly, reliably, repeatedly, safely with confidence which leads to higher customer satisfaction and more successful products. We thrive for a faster, more effective, more flexible game development. Areas for Impact Our engineering teams are focussed on improving the stability and throughput of the products released by the Game Technology Unit and First Party Studios. We want to achieve this through different strategies. Some of the things you can impact: / Develop easy to use and useful tools and frameworks to: - track, benchmark and alarm performance metrics - execute unit, end-to-end and performance tests - reproduce realistic scenarios and help the Spatial software stack to fail fast - collect and display stack-trace and crash dumpsImplement the automation for repetitive tasks (report generation, playtests, dashboarding) / Implement continuous integration and delivery for the software stacks we support.  / Review and improve the release processes of the various teams, identify bottlenecks that prevent to release faster and more frequently, and resolve them. / Educate teams to the software development best practices via consultancy, communities of practice, bottom up grassroots. Being the domain expert and voice of quality and rigour through testing, automation, continuous integration, delivery and monitoring. We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following Strong Object-Oriented software programming and design knowledge with one or more of the following: Java, C#, C++, Go Developed software using Agile and modern development practises, including test automation at the various levels (i.e. unit, integration, end-to-end, performance tests).   Released software in production via continuous integration and delivery systems (i.e. Jenkins, Buildkite, or other commercial solutions) and familiar with their setup and maintenance. Familiar with cloud services (i.e. Google GCP or Amazon AWS) Love solving hard problems and develop simple tools and processes so everyone can solve those hard problems. Have the ability and desire to help other developers improve their development, workflow and testing practices. Comfortable working in an environment with a high level of ambiguity. Experience with game engines (Unreal, Unity), game development and testing best practices preferred. Improbable believes in a future where new, virtual worlds will augment human experience and become as meaningful, lasting and rich as the physical world. We call this the Multiversal Self. Our platform, SpatialOS, lets developers transcend the limits of regular computation, allowing swarms of servers running in the cloud to cooperate in order to simulate worlds far larger and more complex than any single server could. At Improbable, you are surrounded by people who want to improve everything and everyone around them, and who compel you to improve yourself. We’re motivated by the fulfilment of solving hard problems to achieve something profound and transformative. Your Mission is to help us achieve step changes in capability for simulations of unprecedented realism and complexity, for the purpose of ‘in-silico’ experimentation with the effects of aggressive and defensive action on socio-technical systems: the intertwined systems that make up the environment and society. Via R&D in machine learning, statistical inference and computer science, we produce novel methodology and tooling for modellers of complex systems. We are a team of experienced researchers and software engineers interested in removing computational and information bottlenecks in the design and validation of models of complex systems, typically aimed at counterfactual analysis and simulation.  We aim to ensure that models of complex systems are sound, statistically calibrated against real-world evidence, and built in a modular fashion to ensure that more complex models can be synthesized by combining models of simpler components. We are also interested in policy optimisation and reinforcement learning strategies for multiple autonomous agents operating within this synthetic environment. This puts our work at a crossroads between agent-based modelling, multi-agent systems and complex systems. We collaborate with some of the leading academic research groups in the UK. We take inspiration from the success of general-purpose tuning algorithms and resulting frameworks for deep learning (e.g., Tensorflow) and hierarchical Bayesian models (e.g., Stan or Pyro), and aspire to build analogous tools for modelling complex agent systems. Our prior work includes an in-house probabilistic programming language, Keanu. Areas for Impact Become rapidly well-versed in the state-of-the-art in agent-based models and multi-agent systems as captured in the literature and open-source projects.  To pick up statistical, machine learning or mathematical modelling techniques as required independently from the literature, and be able to implement them in a scientific programming language (R, Python, Julia), or, in the case of programmers with experience in lower-level languages, using mathematical/scientific libraries. To pursue independent research in a prescribed strategic direction. This assumes an ability to translate ambitious but often vague requirements into concrete goals, and work under tight time frames without compromising on scientific integrity. To communicate both advances and failures of research initiatives to other researchers as well as non-technical audiences, with confidence backed by data. To transfer scientific know-how so as to empower more junior researchers in the team, as well as scientific modellers and engineers in the broader division. To deeply understand and take ownership of the vision for next-generation software for planning and training for defence and security - to save lives and public funds. This entails parsing sometimes arcane material on wargaming, military simulation and other niche areas, so as to detect room for improvement. To experimentally validate novel statistical procedures in the absence of theory. To work in teams comprising individuals with varied technical backgrounds. To care about maintaining and improving the status of our workplace as an inclusive, diverse working environment. We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following: PhD in statistics, mathematics or a related area. Background in computer science with training in stats and/or machine learning are also welcome. Expertise in scientific programming in a higher-level language for rapid prototyping. For example, statistical and scientific computing in Python, R, or Julia. Adept scientific programmers in other languages are still encouraged to apply. Experience independently implementing statistical algorithms from scratch (i.e., from a mathematical description). Evidence of ability to pursue independent research (e.g., first-author papers or postdoc experience). Demonstrable interest in gaming, simulation, defence, probabilistic modelling; or all of the above. While we think the above experience could be important, we’re keen to hear from people that believe they have valuable experience to bring to the role. If you identify with the team and mission, but not all of our requirements, then please still apply!! Your Mission ...is to build scientific models that support our entire product offering and facilitate next generation decision support. We are a friendly, relaxed & inclusive team with an ambition to take agent-based modelling to the next level. We model social systems as goal-oriented actors operating on imperfect information, “digitally twin” physical environments and infrastructure, and obsess with modularity to recast complex systems as combinations of simpler systems. Our applied scientists seek to balance cutting-edge research with pragmatism and creativity when designing new models. Areas for Impact You will work broadly; conceptualising a system and writing a design document, converting that into a prototype model (we are language agnostic, and have worked in Python, Kotlin, Julia and R) and help educate others on your approach. Your role will combine literature reviews, conceptual modelling & prototyping to create scientifically defensible models that underpin our product offering Building pipelines to extract and integrate data from various sources, making it available to simulation engines and user interfaces. Your work will help military tacticians understand situations and plan more effectively, ultimately helping add to the stability and security of the world. We’d like to hear if you if you identify with SOME of the following: Background and experience in scientific modelling (e.g. agent-based modelling, discrete-event simulation, system dynamics, bayesian networks, probabilistic programming, machine learning). Pragmatic coding ability - with fluency in at least one relevant programming language and the openness to learn and adapt to a variety of languages. We currently use Python, R, Kotlin, Julia and many related tools and libraries. An appreciation of software engineering workflow and openness to work closely with software engineers. We’re motivated by the fulfilment of solving hard problems to achieve something profound and transformative. Your Mission is to join a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and applied scientists focussed on creating the models that will power the next generation of decision support technology. Our culture is friendly, relaxed and inclusive. Our responsibility is to provide the scientific models that sit at the heart of our core product offering. This means building data pipelines to generate accurate representations of real-world environments, and the algorithms for simulating their dynamics. Our ‘north star’ is taking agent-based modelling to the next level in terms of extensibility, fidelity and scientific validity: we model social systems as goal-oriented actors operating on imperfect information; 'digitally twin' physical environments and infrastructure; obsess with modularity to recast complex systems as combinations of simpler systems.  We are interested in understanding the consequences of aggressive action on a society, whether it is a power station being destroyed, a road network becoming blocked, or fake news propagating through a social network - we seek to understand these consequences so that more resilient societies can be engineered and our defence and national security is at the cutting edge of capability. Areas for Impact Contribute to building a next generation product which will help governments gain a richer understanding of their most critical problems through the power of virtual worlds. Developing and implementing algorithms which result in plausible modelling behaviour. Productionising prototype models so that they are scalable, robust and performant. Building pipelines to extract, synthesise and integrate data from various sources, making it available to simulation engines and user interfaces. Making performance improvements to models so that we can reach new levels of scale. Identifying and implementing generalisations and abstractions of existing models so that new models and new geographical areas of interest can be created easily. Building tooling for modellers to author, combine, explore and evaluate their models. We'd like to hear from you if you identify with the following: You have experience building software in a range of languages; we currently use Python and Kotlin and recommend at least one OO language. You are passionate about sharing knowledge with and learning from others. You wish to support other software engineers and applied scientists in developing best practices; you are naturally pragmatic. You enjoy pair programming and collaboration.  You drive integration efforts across teams and the tech stack.
