Airtable is used by all kinds of people: marketers, filmmakers, tech startups, wedding planners, realtors, and cattle ranchers, to name just a few. Unlike single-purpose apps, we think of Airtable as a horizontal toolkit composed of intuitive building blocks that people can repurpose to create their own applications. Our product roadmap is filled with interesting enhancements and additions to this toolkit that greatly expand the boundaries of Airtable’s capabilities. We’re looking for frontend engineers who equally relish the subtle interaction details that make products delightful, the hard technical challenges involved in making a desktop-grade web app, writing highly reusable code, and thinking about how to build better systems of abstraction. Product intuition is as much a necessity as technical knowledge or familiarity with best practices of frontend engineering. What you'll do Spec and build user interfaces that are beautiful, consistent, and fast, that thrive under heavy customization and varying use cases, that encourage exploration, and that earn the trust of our customers through predictable, reliable, and thoughtful interactions. Architect and build highly interactive realtime interfaces and visualizations that scale performantly to 10s of thousands of records. Invent patterns and reusable components that our users can assemble to build powerful software workflows. Work with React, ES6, and HTML/CSS to build and maintain new Airtable features. Create reusable and maintainable frontend systems and abstractions. Who you are You have deep experience with modern frontend JavaScript frameworks and tooling. React expertise is a bonus. You have strong product and design sensibilities, and enjoy perfecting the details that matter. You take a thoughtful approach to decision making; knowing when to move fast and when to do things right. You want to work in a product-driven environment. What we offer Health care: we have you 100% covered (and your dependents 50% covered) with competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance. Airtable's mission is to enable anyone to create software. Users can only create fearlessly when they trust that their data is safe with us. Therefore, security is built into everything we do: product design, feature development, architecture, operations, and customer support. Our goal in security engineering is to provide delightful platform and product security. We strive to go above and beyond in protecting user data, implementing layered defenses, and making enforcement and compliance easy. We're looking for engineers to work on all aspects of product security. Security work at Airtable is not just a matter of checking for common vulnerabilities or enforcing compliance with a checklist of best practices. We think through problems from first principles, and work with the whole company to design and deliver trustworthy systems that serve users and operators correctly in the face of hostile action. This means working at all levels of system building: product design, infrastructure, user experience, phishing and fraud prevention, attack vector analysis, and everything in between. What you'd do Propose, design, build, and deploy security improvements across all aspects of Airtable's systems and product surface. Research emerging threats and evolving best practices, and educate the rest of the team about your findings. You have a well-developed mental toolkit for thinking adversarially and holistically about systems. You excel at communicating analyses of technical issues and recommendations for addressing them. You can make systems as well as break them; you're as comfortable building software as you are finding holes in it. You're familiar with Javascript, Node, V8, Linux, and AWS — or comparable technologies — and are able to think through the security implications of systems built using them. You're passionate about protecting users. What we offer Health care: we have you 100% covered (and your dependents 50% covered) with competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance. Airtable is a mission-critical system for a diverse set of teams and industries. We build our platform to scale, stay resilient, and deliver delightful user experience all around. Our infrastructure requires thorough thinking, deep research into how things work, and rigorous coding. Our mission is ambitious, but we like to keep our infrastructure simple. As one of the first dedicated site reliability engineers at Airtable, you will play a critical role in scaling and refining our operational practices. Site reliability engineering begins with building solid automation across the software delivery process, including configuration, provisioning, testing, deployment, and beyond. SREs will also work with software engineers to help understand the way their code behaves in production, and build nontrivial internal tooling to enable this. We also strive for a strong security posture, and SRE will help define and implement operational practices that protect our users. Lastly, of course, our operations team is the last line of defense when incidents happen, and SREs will be part of the team that responds to them. What you'll do Automate everything: deploys, rollbacks, database provisioning, failovers, and everything in between. Design and implement monitoring tooling across the stack, and optimize systems for uptime, performance, and reliability based on the data gathered by this tooling. Design and write tests that investigate how our infrastructure handles failure and scaling. Research hot-off-the-press CVEs and implement best practices. Build occasional product features as appropriate. Write solid, maintainable code (including a lot of JavaScript) for all of the above. Manage our Elasticsearch cluster Who you are You're painfully thorough, whether it's scripting bulletproof deployment automation, writing a recovery playbook that an engineer can follow without fail at 3 a.m., or digging into logs and monitoring data to find the root of a problem. You're OK carrying a pager and take it seriously, but you take pride when the pager hasn't rung in the past week. You've worked with Linux, containers/namespaces, and system automation tools for Unix and cloud platforms. Airtable’s backend presents many unique challenges and opportunities for designing and architecting complex systems. Our purpose-built relational database engine supports realtime synchronization between different users, revision history, a type system, and an engine that supports formulas and dependencies/constraints. As a backend engineer you'll contribute to the database engine and formula engine that power Airtable bases. Unlike single-purpose apps, we think of Airtable as a horizontal toolkit composed of intuitive building blocks that people can repurpose to create their own applications. Our product roadmap is filled with interesting enhancements and additions to this toolkit that greatly expand the boundaries of Airtable's capabilities. What you'll do Architect and scale complex systems like our realtime database engine, revision history, and formula engine. Design core pieces of Airtable’s infrastructure, optimizing for long-term maintainability, performance, and reliability. Build and scale systems for monitoring, tracing, profiling, debugging, and deploying Airtable. Take full ownership and responsibility for building, shipping, and maintaining core Airtable features, end-to-end. Who you are You have experience in databases, distributed systems, and backend performance measurement and optimization. You derive joy from refactoring and abstracting in order to make complex systems fun to develop on and easy to understand. You have a strong background in computer science and mathematics. What we offer Health care: we have you 100% covered (and your dependents 50% covered) with competitive medical, dental, and vision insurance. You'll also be eligible for a complimentary membership to One Medical Group Learning & Development: we offer a $2,000 per year stipend for your personal career development Gym Membership: we’re proud to provide employees in our San Francisco and New York offices with complimentary gym memberships to Equinox, or up to $100/month reimbursement towards any other gym Catered lunches: we have high-quality catered lunches every day and well-stocked kitchens. Airtable's unique approach to enabling end-user software creation has struck a chord with users across many industries and use cases. Our accelerating present and future growth, coupled with our ambitious product surface area, brings many challenges. Data engineering can play a critical role in understanding how people use the open-ended toolkit that Airtable offers, thereby enabling our team to improve users' experience and accelerate their rate of success. As one of the first data engineers at Airtable, you'll make an enormous contribution to our burgeoning data engineering efforts. You'll design and build systems that will enable analytics, experimentation, and user-facing features. What you'll do Help architect, build, and scale our initial data engineering platform, with an eye on security and privacy. Work closely with the rest of engineering, as well as other stakeholders from our growth, sales, marketing, and product teams, to understand the data needs of the business and produce systems that enable better product and growth decision-making. Work on the data collection pipeline across the entire stack, from client-side event logging to ETL. Systems you'll touch may include data warehousing using MPP databases (e.g. RedShift or Vertica), workflow systems (e.g. Airflow or Luigi), streaming data processors (e.g. Kinesis or Kafka), and distributed data processing systems (e.g. Spark or Hadoop). Ensure that our business-critical data is accurate and correct. Who you are You're passionate and thoughtful about building systems that enhance human understanding. You have professional experience working with modern data storage and processing technologies, and you've wrangled enough data to understand how often the complex systems that produce data can go wrong. You can write clear, correct code in at least one programming language, and are willing to become effective in others as needed to get your job done. You communicate with clarity and precision in written form; experience communicating with graphs and plots, or at least understanding how to enable other people to do this, is a big bonus. You may have experience administering modern large-scale data management systems such as ELK.
